Age Spots

Age spots are tan to brown freckle-like marks that are caused by excessive sun exposure.

What are Age Spots?

Age spots are tan to brown freckle-like marks caused by excessive sun exposure. They commonly appear on the face, chest, shoulders, and arms since those areas tend to get the most sun exposure. Ultraviolet (UV) rays accelerate the production of melanin, which gives skin its brown pigmentation. Age spots result from overactive pigment cells and melanin being grouped in higher concentrations.

If you do notice an unusual or changing brown spot on your skin, schedule an appointment with a dermatologist as soon as possible.

Why do Freckles Form?

Like age spots, freckles also appear on the skin as a result of sun exposure. They may vary in color, but are uniform and primarily darker than the surrounding skin. The appearance of freckles may also be due to a person’s genetic makeup.

Freckles tend to appear on the face, but can also occur in other areas that receive a lot of direct sunlight, like the shoulders and arms. They are produced or may become more pronounced when UV rays trigger the body to create more melanin to protect the skin. They are harmless and are not considered a medical condition, but if you are unhappy about the appearance of your freckles, Foley Vision Center provides non-surgical treatments to help reduce them.
