Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that damage the optic nerve.

What is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that damage the optic nerve. Often associated with abnormally high intraocular pressure, Glaucoma occurs when either too much or too little fluid is produced in the eye. Fluid production disbalance is due to the drainage or outflow (trabecular meshwork) of the eye becoming blocked. This illness causes irreversible damage and may lead to permanent vision loss.

What are the Symptoms?

Glaucoma does not typically cause many symptoms in its earliest stages. This is why many patients wait until significant vision problems appear before seeking help. Unfortunately, there is no cure for glaucoma, but early detection can be effective in preserving the patient’s eyesight for a much longer period of time.

What are the Risk Factors?

  • High or low blood pressure
  • Diabetes
  • Myopia
  • Large cup to disc ratios
  • Family history
  • Thyroid disease
  • Ocular injuries
  • Chronic steroid use

There are certain health conditions and risk factors that make it more likely for some people to develop glaucoma. These include; being over 40, having a genetic predisposition, and being nearsighted or farsighted. Individuals who are of African, Hispanic, or Asian heritage are also more likely to develop glaucoma.

If you are over the age of 40, we recommend that you receive an annual eye exam especially if you have a family history of severe eye disease. Scheduling regular exams every six months may be the best course of action.

Effective glaucoma treatment can help to slow the decline of your eyesight and help maintain clear vision for longer. Debilitating conditions such as glaucoma are a strong example of the need for regular eye exams. At Foley Vision Center, we offer comprehensive eye checks and tests.
