Corneal Refractive Therapy

Corneal Refractive Therapy (CRT) relies on a unique contact lens to correct nearsightedness.

What is Corneal Refractive Therapy?

Corneal Refractive Therapy (CRT) relies on a unique rigid gas permeable contact lens designed to temporarily correct nearsightedness (myopia) by reshaping your cornea while you sleep. As a result of this therapy, you may then be able to go throughout the day without any lenses. CRT lenses are made from highly oxygen permeable material in a unique design intended for this purpose.

Am I a Candidate for Corneal Refractive Therapy?

The CRT lens is only intended for patients with low to moderate myopia (nearsightedness up to -6 diopters) and mild astigmatism. Schedule an appointment at Foley Vision Center to find out if you are a candidate.

If you experience any of the following conditions, you should not undergo CRT:

  • Inflammation or infection of the eye
  • Any eye disease, injury, or abnormality that affects the cornea or surrounding tissue
  • Any systemic condition that may affect the eye or be worsened by wearing contact lenses
  • Allergic reactions of the eye, which may be caused or exaggerated by wearing contact lenses or use of contact lens solutions
  • Eyes that are red or irritated, or suffer severe dryness

In general, ideal candidates can be any age but must have healthy eyes. You should be dependent on glasses or contact lenses and have a desire to reduce this dependence during daytime hours.

What Should I Expect From the Results?

Most patients experience rapid improvement in the first few days of treatment and achieve nearly their optimum vision within 10-14 days. A small percentage of patients will need additional correction to function under all conditions.

CRT is temporary. If you stop wearing the lenses while you sleep, your lens-free vision will return to its original state within a few days.
